Memphis Domestic Assault Lawyer

Domestic assault is different from regular (simple) assault in that the two parties must be relatives by blood or marriage, be divorced, live together as a family, or have children together. The consequences of a conviction can be dire for future employment, as having such a charge on your record can scare away potential employers. Also, under Federal law you are forever prohibited from possessing a firearm with a domestic assault conviction from any state. Because of consequences like this I do not advise clients to plead guilty to a domestic charge.

Additionally, the evidence in these types of cases can by murky: often there is little physical proof and no other witnesses. Because of the close relationship of the parties, emotions can run high and the facts can get distorted. When the government's only proof is one person's version of what happened, the truth can be far from what is written in the police report. As such, sometimes it is best to take these cases to trial. Another option may be to dispose of the case through anger management classes and counseling. Whichever course you want to take, as your Memphis domestic assault lawyer I will investigate every angle of the case and fight to get you the best outcome.
